The depot closed at the end
of business on April 30, 1959 on the retirement of R. B.
Mize. Mize started as a telegrapher at Cave Spring with
seniority date of Aug. 1, 1912. He worked at Auburn about
1920 as the 2nd trick operator. At that time, Auburn's
telegraph office was manned 24 hours a day. In 1923 he
moved to Brownsville, TN and then worked as agent at
Allensville, KY and Henry, TN. In 1938, L&N's Auburn
agent, R. L. Stevenson, retired and the position was open
for bidding. Having remembered Auburn from the 1920's and
liking the town, Mr. Mize had enough seniority to
successfully bid and get the Auburn position and remained
until the agency closed in 1959.
He died on Dec. 26, 1976 and
is buried in the Auburn cemetery with his wife, Katherine.
